Meg was very thirsty. She went into a coffee shop. An old woman was at a table near the door. A small dog was at her feet.
Meg bought a glass of juice and some cookies. She sat down at the table next to the old woman. The old woman was very quiet. She didn't say anything for a long time. Meg though, "She is lonely!"

Meg went to the old woman and talked to her. "It is very hot today," she said. "Yes, but it is nice inside here," replied the old woman.
Meg looked at the dog and asked, "Does your dog like people?" The woman answered, "Oh, yes! He loves people."
Meg asked, "Does your dog like cookies?" "They are his favorite food," said the old woman.

Meg was very afraid of dogs. She asked, "Does your dog bite?" The old woman smiled and said, "No! My dog is very tame. He is even afraid of cats!"

Meg took a cookie in her hand and reached under the table. She put it near the dog's mouth. The dog didn't bite the cookie. He bit her hand! Meg jumped up. She screamed, "You said, 'He doesn't bite.'"
The old woman looked at Meg and then at the dog. Then she said, "That's not my dog!"
